How to Utilize Proof in Your Research Paper

A research paper is an essay that discusses or analyzes an aspect of a subject. Whatever field of study you’re studying, your research paper should be backed by the views and observations of others. A legal professional studies the experiences of others to draw comparisons, then applies them to their own situation to back up their argument. In the medical field, doctors study and interpret medical data for patients who are unable to communicate the issue to their doctors.

Education is one area in which this occurs frequently. One of the most popular papers I’ve been privileged to read was written by Bahador Bahrami, an associate professor at the University of Toronto. In his essay on critical thinking, he uses a technique not unlike mine called a presupposition reverse to show how our prior beliefs about a subject created the new reality that the previous belief was not true. His premise is very strong as is his argument. As I said the premise is an assumption. It’s a great one. He further proceeds to show the way this assumption about language causes a problem in his writing. The problem is primarily in his use of language. However his entire argument is based on his language usage. I’ll give him credit however, since he clearly gives his reasons for using this particular word, “theorizing,” in the final paragraph of his argument.

This is a good method to demonstrate the general importance of your writing, and also your ability to analyze and critique information that is already in existence. Without the ability to apply the skills that you have learned in your research papers your writing won’t be very distinctive. And I’m sure you have.

The argument he is arguing about boils down to this: He presumes (and he is right about this assumption) that your main idea is successful and then builds his argument from there. But, if you read his arguments, you will see that you don’t really see the main idea at play until the author explains it. He makes a number of presuppositions in support of his main idea that is the reason why the meanings of “proposition” or “intuition” are not recognized. In the same way, he commits the fallacy of induction. See my earlier blog post on this topic for more details on this subject.

To challenge his argument, I would like to ask you what your primary idea is. It doesn’t matter what others think if it’s wrong. You’ve shown them that your main idea isn’t true and there’s no reason to argue with them. If it is right, it doesn’t matter what others think. Simply look at your argument to prove it.

There will be some who disagree with me and will argue that there could be two sides to the argument. I’m not certain how significant this issue is, and it might be something that can be discussed in a discussion about the details of your argument. At the moment, however I’m not going to. Let me leave this as an exercise in intelligence.

This topic can be difficult and many students abandon it. But it doesn’t have to be. It is crucial to remember that your goal is to prove your point with logic and evidence. Without a solid argument this is not possible.

So, what makes an argument that is convincing for your paper? There are two kinds of proof. Deductive proofs are based only on facts. While it might appear simple, there are many deductive arguments. If I say that this vehicle is unsafe, you’re already making my point.

The issue is that it’s very easy to slip into the’slippery slope’ of proof when you begin using logic to justify your argument. You could argue, for example, that because I said the car was old that it must be true. You would be right however, the point is that you’ve created an argument and that’s all there is to it. You can also make inductive arguments. You might say, for instance, that I told you to buy a car because it’s cheaper than other brands. The argument is because you have a direct experience with cars that are cheaper that you should believe this particular brand more (since it worked for you).).

The most important thing to make your research paper effective and efficient is to use evidence that is valid and reliable. Be sure to read through the entire argument from beginning to end. Also, ensure that you provide proof of your argument in the conclusion of your paper before letting your reader take away anything else from your paragraph. This will ensure that they comprehend your main point and will ensure that your evidence is solid and reliable.
